Six Continents Index Unveils First Global Evaluation, Exposing Major Regional Variations in Energy Drink Formulation

(SeaPRwire) –   For the first time in history, energy drinks from all six continents were collected, assessed against the same 36 criteria, and laboratory-verified the top performers. What the results reveal about each region is unexpected

Meckesheim, MECKESHEIM, May 18, 2026 — The Six Continents Index today released the inaugural global comparative analysis of energy drinks across all inhabited continents, uncovering significant regional variations in formulation, ingredient selection, and product quality standards. The study examined energy drinks sourced from markets such as the United States, Germany, Japan, China, Kenya, Chile, Nepal, and New Zealand using a 36-point objective product quality index that exclusively evaluates verifiable product attributes—including declared caffeine content, sugar quantity and type, vitamin composition, pasteurisation methods, packaging integrity, and label clarity.

GLOBAL COLLECTION & EVALUATION PROCESS

Energy drink samples were gathered from all six inhabited continents—encompassing not only major markets like the USA, Germany, Japan, and China but also remote regions including Nepal, Kenya, Mauritius, Chile, and New Zealand, among others.

To maintain evaluation consistency, each brand was represented by a single flagship or core SKU sold and labeled for consumers, regardless of whether the brand operated across multiple countries or continents or offered several variants or flavors.

Each product underwent individual assessment based on a 36-criteria objective quality framework. This system focuses solely on objectively measurable characteristics, such as caffeine declaration accuracy, sugar content and labeling, vitamin inclusion, pasteurisation status, packaging materials, supply chain traceability, and label readability, among other factors.
No sensory testing (e.g., taste), brand recognition, or popularity metrics were incorporated into the scoring. Only verifiable physical and textual product attributes were considered.

Top-ranked products underwent independent laboratory analysis and chemical verification to confirm their reported specifications.

SURPRISING DISCOVERIES

In addition to individual product rankings, the Six Continents Index conducted continental-level comparisons across the entire global dataset, revealing that despite sharing a common category classification, energy drinks exhibit markedly different product philosophies and formulations depending on geographic origin.

  • 85.7% of European energy drinks are pasteurised—preserved through natural thermal processing. In North America: just 12%. In South America: less than 1%.
  • In Asia, 78.9% of energy drinks use real sugar. In North America: only 8%. Consumers in these regions are effectively consuming distinctly formulated beverages.
  • 84% of North American energy drinks rely entirely on artificial sweeteners. In Europe: only 4.2%. Across Asia, Australia, South America, and Africa: nearly none.
  • European energy drinks average 4.0 vitamins per bottle, compared with just 2.9 in North America.
  • Aspartame* appears in 10.5% of the total global sample, with 43% of all aspartame-containing products originating from Africa.
  • BPA-free packaging labeling remains extremely rare worldwide, appearing clearly on only 1.4% of all sampled products.
  • Despite being the world’s largest revenue-generating market for energy drinks, North America ranked last overall among the six continents evaluated.

Europe emphasizes pasteurisation. North America opts for artificial sweetness. Asia prefers real sugar. Australia highlights vitamin fortification. Same beverage category—completely divergent approaches.

GLOBAL BRAND INSIGHTS

Among the numerous brands analyzed across six continents, two stood out beyond mere rankings. Red Bull was the only energy drink brand present in virtually every market included in the assessment, while Japan’s Lipovitan-D holds the distinction of being the oldest brand in the study, having launched in 1962.

LEADING PRODUCTS BY REGION

At the continental level, Europe achieved the highest composite score in the index. Australia & Oceania placed second, followed by Asia in third position.

At the brand level, HELL Energy from Hungary secured the highest overall score for objective product quality. Second place went to 28 BLACK from Germany, trailed by TAKE OFF, also from Germany.
