The recent 4th Luxembourg International Dragon Boat Festival, held on June 7 along the Moselle River in Remich, presented a curious juxtaposition. Co-hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Luxembourg and the Department of Culture and Tourism of Jiangsu Province, the event aimed to foster friendship through dragon boats and tea. It offered a glimpse into the “Charm of Jiangsu” and traditional Chinese culture for a European audience.
The festival featured a cultural bazaar, “Tea for Harmony·Yaji Cultural Salon.” This event showcased Jiangsu’s tea culture through various displays. Visitors saw cultural and creative works from 13 Jiangsu cities. These included Nanjing Yunjin Brocade and Suzhou Song Brocade. Changzhou’s Jintan Paper-Cutting and Nantong Blue Calico were also displayed. Attendees could also try intangible heritage crafts like paper-cutting and stone rubbing.
A concurrent photo exhibition, also titled “Tea for Harmony·Yaji Cultural Salon,” opened in Luxembourg. This exhibition, a joint Chinese-Luxembourgish effort, featured nearly 100 photographs. It traced the history of Jiangsu’s tea culture. The display included tea ware, local delicacies, and aspects of Jiangsu’s lifestyle. It also highlighted regional scenery and tourism. The exhibition aimed to interpret the humanistic spirit found in Chinese tea traditions.
Jiangsu boasts a deep and ancient tea culture. Historically, Jiangsu tea traveled globally via the Ancient Silk Road, Ancient Tea Horse Road, and Maritime Silk Road. Today, this culture continues to connect people, tourism, quality of life, and international exchange. In 2022, China’s Traditional Tea Processing Techniques were recognized by UNESCO. This included Jiangsu’s Yuhua Tea, Biluochun Tea, and Fuchun Tea Snacks. The UN designated May 21 as International Tea Day in 2019. This recognized tea’s role as a global connector. The spirit of dragon boat racing, tea art, and Jiangsu’s heritage crafts all work together. They aim to share Jiangsu’s tea culture with the world.
