(SeaPRwire) – Officials in Lithuania are on high alert following a major data breach that exposed over 600,000 records from national databases, an incident suspected to be the work of a foreign state.
On Friday, the Lithuanian general prosecutor’s office revealed that the compromised information mostly originated from real estate and corporate registries, which were breached using the login details of authorized organizations.
Adrijus Jusas, the director of the State Enterprise Centre of Registers, stepped down on Monday in the wake of the security breach.
According to prosecutors, immediate security protocols were put in place, such as freezing the accounts of compromised users and limiting access until credentials are updated.
While the prosecutor’s office indicated that a foreign government is believed to be behind the attack, officials have not named the specific country.
The Baltic nation of 2.9 million remains highly vigilant, as it is a primary target of Russia’s hybrid warfare in Europe, which encompasses sabotage, arson, vandalism, and disinformation campaigns.
On Sunday, opposition politician Laurynas Kasčiūnas suggested on social media that the cyberattack might be a Russian intelligence operation, though he did not provide proof to support his assertion.
He cautioned that the stolen data could include the home addresses of diplomats, politicians, military members, and intelligence officers, potentially enabling adversaries to monitor or blackmail these individuals.
