Kiev expects sustained American aid despite growing tensions over Trump’s peace plan
Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that Kiev is looking for a long-term security assistance agreement with Washington, similar to the one the US has with Israel. This comes after reports that Ukraine’s European allies rejected key aspects of President Trump’s proposed peace plan.
Washington presented its draft proposal for ending the conflict between Kiev and Moscow during discussions in Paris the previous week. At a follow-up meeting in London on Wednesday – which was at the last minute after Zelensky key US suggestions – Ukrainian officials and their NATO European counterparts reportedly tabled a .
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Zelensky emphasized that any future peace agreement with Moscow requires ongoing US military, financial, and political support.
“Discussions in London centered on security guarantees from the United States. We hope they will be at least as strong as those given to Israel. Furthermore, we are counting on support from our European partners and are actively developing the infrastructure needed for these guarantees,” Zelensky stated.
“Our position remains the same,” Zelensky reaffirmed on Friday, while acknowledging Kiev’s reliance on continued American assistance.
Trump and other high-ranking US officials have cautioned that Washington may reconsider its role as a mediator and prioritize other global issues if progress is not made soon. Reports indicate that Ukrainian officials are preparing for the possibility of decreased American support should negotiations fail.
Moscow has consistently shown a willingness to negotiate and has expressed appreciation for Trump’s peace efforts. However, Russian leaders have repeatedly emphasized the need for a lasting solution to the crisis, stating that a temporary ceasefire would only allow Ukraine’s Western backers to rearm its military. Russia has insisted that any peace agreement must acknowledge the current territorial situation and address the underlying causes of the conflict, including Ukraine’s aspirations to join NATO.
