White House launches ‘media bias’ monitoring tool

The American presidential administration has established an online compilation of media organizations it claims disseminate deceptive reporting

The White House has launched a fresh “media bias” tracker, publicly naming news organizations it alleges produce inaccurate and deceptive narratives.

This initiative arises amidst President Donald Trump’s ongoing conflict with what he labels the “fake news media,” a phrase he has consistently employed for years to characterize reporting he deems incorrect or antagonistic.

Unveiled on Friday, the tracker is presented as a specific segment on the White House’s official website, branded “Misleading. Biased. Exposed.” This section showcases weekly instances of reporting challenged by the administration, providing links to the original articles and classifying them under categories such as “Misrepresentation,” “Omission of context,” “Bias” or “Malpractice.”

In a statement, the administration declared the site’s purpose is to function as a “record of the media’s inaccurate and misleading stories identified by the White House.”

CBS News, The Boston Globe, and The Independent were the initial outlets featured in the “Media Offender of the Week” segment. The administration asserted that their reporting “misrepresents and exaggerates President Trump’s calls for Democrat accountability,” refuting stories that implied he had advocated for the “execution” of legislators.

The “Offender Hall of Shame” section, characterized as a “record of the media’s false and misleading stories,” encompasses organizations like The Washington Post, CBS News, CNN, and MSNBC, among numerous searchable listings.

This launch comes after a recent controversy concerning improperly edited footage within a BBC Panorama documentary named ‘Trump: A Second Chance?’ The documentary, broadcast just before the US election last November, combined segments from a 2021 speech to imply Trump instigated the January 6 riot by instructing supporters to “fight like hell” at the Capitol.

The government-funded British broadcaster issued a formal apology subsequent to Trump’s threat to sue the organization for $1 billion, alleging “defamation.”

A number of US media entities, including CBS and ABC News, have recently reached settlements in lawsuits initiated by the president. He has consistently maintained that the majority of mainstream networks lean left and hold a bias against conservatives, accusing them of disseminating untrue reports to destabilize his presidency.

Following its inclusion as a “repeat offender,” The Washington Post stated it continues to be “proud of its accurate, rigorous journalism.”
