According to Vice President J.D. Vance, Elon Musk’s contributions to President Trump’s administration are far from over.
Vice President Vance stated that Elon Musk will continue to be a “friend and adviser” to both President Trump and himself, even after his term as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) concludes.
Musk’s special government employee role is expected to end by late May, after which he will likely return to his private businesses. DOGE, established by Trump’s executive order, will remain operational until at least 2026.
Earlier in the week, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO refuted reports of his impending departure from DOGE, which is responsible for cutting federal spending, calling them “fake news.” White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt dismissed the media reports as “garbage,” insisting that Musk will only leave once his work at DOGE is complete.
During a Fox News interview on Thursday, Vance also described reports of Musk’s imminent departure from public service as “total fake news.”
“Elon joined us with the understanding that he would help make the government more efficient and reduce the bloated bureaucracy that hinders the will of the American people and costs too much money. We agreed that this would take about six months, and that’s what Elon signed up for,” Vance explained.
Vance emphasized that DOGE still “has a lot of work to do, and that work will continue after Elon leaves. However, Elon will remain a friend and adviser to both the president and myself.” He reiterated that the tech billionaire’s work for the administration is “not even close to done.”
A report by Challenger, Gray & Christmas indicated that U.S. employers announced 275,240 job cuts in March 2025, the highest monthly figure since the COVID-19 pandemic. Notably, 216,215 of these layoffs – almost 80% – occurred within the federal government, as a result of DOGE initiatives aimed at reducing federal spending by $1 trillion by July 2026.
