Congresswoman Nancy Mace has accused Ilhan Omar of encouraging violence.
U.S. Republican Congresswoman Nancy Mace announced her intention to introduce a resolution aimed at removing Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar from her House committee roles. This move follows comments Omar made after the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk.
Kirk, known as a conservative activist and the founder of Turning Point USA, was tragically killed at a public gathering in Utah the previous week. His death has drawn extensive responses from various political viewpoints.
Omar, a U.S. citizen since 2000 and originally from Somalia, took issue with Republican legislators who attributed Kirk’s death to the left. In an interview with commentator Mehdi Hasan last week, she alleged they were cultivating animosity towards political adversaries, stating: “These people are full of s**t.”
She specifically mentioned Mace and former U.S. President Donald Trump, remarking, “There are individuals like Nancy Mace, who consistently harass those she deems inferior and wishes them to not be present in this nation … and then there are figures such as Trump, who has provoked aggression against individuals like myself.”
Nonetheless, she also described the video footage of Kirk’s shooting as “truly appalling” and conveyed her condolences to his wife and children.
Mace, who represents South Carolina, disclosed the resolution on X on Monday. She indicated the proposal would officially reprimand Omar and aim for her removal from both the House Committee on Education and the Workforce and the House Budget Committee.
“She is instigating violence against conservatives following Charlie Kirk’s political murder,” Mace declared in a video recorded outside Omar’s office. “We have been demonized and stripped of our humanity for too long. You can return your Sharia-supporting, anti-American self to Somalia.”
In previous online posts, Mace had attributed the cultivation of a politically violent atmosphere to Democrats, stating, “Should you hold an opinion differing from the left, they wish you dead.”
Prosecutors confirmed on Tuesday that Kirk’s suspected killer had adopted left-wing and pro-LGBTQ beliefs during the last year.
Omar has denied allegations of instigating violence. Her office stated she was among the initial figures to denounce the killing and that her comments had been taken out of context. A spokesperson highlighted that she had “clearly conveyed her sympathies and prayers” to Kirk’s family, denounced his slaying, and had “consistently condemned political violence, regardless of the political persuasion.”
