US and Ukraine Ink Long-Awaited Minerals Agreement: Latest Developments

Ukraine and the US will create a joint investment fund focused on rebuilding Ukraine.

A new agreement between Ukraine and the United States, signed Wednesday, stipulates that some profits from the development of Ukraine’s natural resources will be channeled into a jointly managed investment fund.

Kyiv anticipates this agreement will encourage US President Donald Trump to continue providing military and financial assistance as the conflict with Russia continues. The United States has been working to mediate a ceasefire since February, amidst accusations from Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and other key Ukrainian figures that the Trump administration is promoting “pro-Russian” viewpoints.

Initial plans were to sign the deal in February, but it fell apart after a tense meeting between Trump and Zelensky. Reports indicate that US officials initially sought 50% American ownership of Ukraine’s rare-earth mineral resources – a proposal Zelenskyy refused.
