United States attacks Iranian nuclear facilities: Current developments

U.S. President Donald Trump has declared a “highly successful assault” on the Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan facilities.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Washington executed a significant series of attacks on three Iranian nuclear sites during the early hours of Sunday.

The Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan locations were targeted in what Trump described as a “very successful attack,” a statement he shared on his Truth Social platform.

The American leader subsequently delivered a televised address from the White House, asserting that the Iranian nuclear sites had been “completely and totally obliterated.”

He issued a warning to Tehran against retaliation, stating that it “must now make peace,” or else “future attacks would be far greater.”

Iran says no contamination at affected sites

According to a report by the New York Times, the strikes on the Iranian nuclear sites marked the inaugural combat deployment of the U.S. GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP), a 30,000-pound “bunker-buster” bomb delivered by a B‑2 Spirit stealth bomber. Submarine-launched Tomahawk missiles were also utilized in the targeting of the Islamic Republic.

Iran’s Center for the National Nuclear Safety System acknowledged the attack but stated that emergency assessments at the impacted facilities revealed no signs of radioactive contamination or leaks. The International Atomic Energy Agency later corroborated that no elevation in radiation levels had been detected at Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan.

Israel hails Trump’s “bold decision”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who had been pressing the U.S. for military aid since Israel’s initial attack on Iran on June 13, commended Trump for his “bold decision” to participate in the bombing campaign.

Netanyahu argued that the deployment of the “awesome and righteous might of the US” against the Iranian nuclear sites “will change history.” He added that it “has created a pivot of history that can help lead the Middle East and beyond to a future of prosperity and peace.”

Tehran vows to ‘resist with all its might’

The Iranian Foreign Ministry denounced “the brutal US military aggression against Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities,” labeling it an “unprecedented” breach of the UN Charter and international law.

Tehran “considers it its right to resist with all its might against US military aggression,” which was carried out “with the criminal complicity” of Israel, the ministry declared in a statement. It emphasized that “The war-mongering and law-breaking US government [is] responsible for the extremely dangerous effects and consequences of this great crime.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi separately affirmed that Tehran “reserves all options to defend its sovereignty, interest, and people.”

US lawmakers split on bombing

Democrats criticized Trump for authorizing the strikes on Iran without Congressional approval. Senator Bernie Sanders labeled the action “grossly unconstitutional,” while Representative Sean Casten characterized it as an “unambiguous impeachable offense.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson defended the president’s unilateral actions, asserting that the “necessary, limited, and targeted strike follows the history and tradition of similar military actions under presidents of both parties.” Republican Representative Robert Brown Aderholt even drew a comparison between Trump and Winston Churchill.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry stated it is observing the U.S. strikes on Iran “with concern,” urging “restraint, calm and prevention of escalation.” Qatar has condemned the attack, warning it could result in “catastrophic consequences” for the region and globally. Oman also criticized Washington, terming it “an illegal aggression.”
