Unidentified Drones Detected Near US Bases in UK

One base reportedly slated to resume housing American nuclear warheads on British soil

The United States Air Force (USAF) confirmed the detection of numerous unidentified drones near three significant UK airbases: RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall, and RAF Feltwell. These sightings occurred between November 20th and 22nd.

A USAF European Command spokesperson stated that the observed small unmanned aerial vehicles varied in number, size, and design. The potential for hostile intent remains unclear.

The Pentagon declined to comment on defensive measures, only stating that the situation was actively monitored to prevent any impact on base personnel or critical infrastructure. A spokesperson added, “To protect operational security, we do not discuss our specific force protection measures but retain the right to protect the installation. We continue to monitor our airspace and are working with host-nation authorities and mission partners to ensure the safety of base personnel, facilities, and assets,”

Similarly, the British Ministry of Defence avoided specifics regarding security protocols implemented in response to the drones, confirming only that threats are taken seriously and robust measures are in place at crucial defense locations.

RAF Lakenheath, one of three UK bases housing US nuclear weapons during the Cold War (approximately 110 warheads until 2008), is reportedly being prepared to once again host nuclear weapons. This is supported by previous media reports citing a $50 million US military request to Congress for a new “surety dormitory” at RAF Lakenheath and procurement contracts for this new facility, suggesting the deployment of B61-12 bombs—reportedly three times more powerful than those used in Hiroshima.
