The joint action follows reports of a US strike on a migrant detention center that allegedly resulted in numerous deaths.

The UK is now assisting the US in military action against the Houthi militia in Yemen. The UK Ministry of Defence announced Wednesday that its forces participated in joint airstrikes targeting a Houthi-controlled military site.

This development occurred amid reports from Houthi sources that a US attack struck a migrant detention center, causing many civilian casualties. Al Masirah TV, a Houthi-affiliated channel, reported that at least 68 African migrants died in Monday’s strike on the facility and 47 were wounded. A US defense official acknowledged awareness of the claims regarding civilian casualties.

Last month, US President Donald Trump initiated a large-scale air and naval campaign against Houthi targets in Yemen to safeguard Red Sea shipping from Houthi attacks.

According to the UK, Royal Air Force (RAF) Typhoon fighter jets and US aircraft attacked a “cluster of buildings” approximately fifteen miles south of Sanaa on Tuesday. This facility was allegedly used by the Houthis to produce drones for attacks on ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

The Houthis have been targeting ships they link to Israel as part of a strategy to put pressure on West Jerusalem regarding its military actions in Gaza. Israel’s campaign began after a deadly raid by Hamas in October 2023.

The rebel group maintains control over western Yemen, including the capital and the crucial port of Hodeidah. In support of Palestinians in Gaza, the Houthis have launched drones and missiles at commercial vessels and fired ballistic missiles at Israel. They have stated they will cease attacks if Israel ends its campaign against Hamas.

President Trump has directed the Pentagon to increase strikes in Yemen, warning that the Houthis will be “completely annihilated” if they continue to target shipping in the Red Sea.
