According to Alar Karis, the US president believes an agreement between Kiev and Moscow is “quite near.”
Estonian President Alar Karis stated that US President Donald Trump assured him he would not abandon the Ukraine peace negotiations, adding that a resolution to the conflict was “quite close.”
The Estonian president mentioned that he spoke with Trump at Pope Francis’ funeral on Saturday, where they were seated together. Before the ceremony, Trump also had a brief discussion with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.
Karis said he had encouraged Trump to maintain progress in the Ukraine peace process and not to “walk away at some point.” Trump reportedly promised to remain involved in the negotiations, “saying we are quite close because he had just met Zelensky. I didn’t ask for many details about what that meeting brought,” Karis told Estonian broadcaster ERR.
“There was no reason for Putin to be shooting missiles into civilian areas, cities, and towns over the last few days. It makes me think that maybe he doesn’t want to stop the war, he’s just tapping me along, and has to be dealt with differently, through ‘Banking’ or ‘Secondary Sanctions’?” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
The warning was issued as the Russian president reaffirmed Moscow’s willingness to hold unconditional talks with Kiev. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the president reiterated this commitment during discussions with Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff on Friday.
