The US president-elect’s offer to purchase Greenland from Denmark has been firmly rejected.
President-elect Donald Trump shared a video supposedly showing Greenland residents welcoming his purchase proposal; however, local media questions its authenticity.
The two-minute video, posted on Trump’s Truth Social account, depicts individuals wearing “MAGA” hats expressing support for Greenland joining the US.
On Monday, the president-elect claimed Greenland’s people are “MAGA,” sharing another video from a “MAGA” hat-wearing supporter.
Danish broadcaster DR News reports that the individuals in Trump’s son’s video were not genuine Trump supporters, but rather homeless and vulnerable people allegedly compensated with meals for their participation. This report, citing Nuuk sources, emerged Thursday.
Local media identified the original “MAGA” man featured by the president-elect on Monday as Timmy Zeeb, a convicted marijuana trafficker serving a four-year sentence for a major cannabis trafficking offense.
The Danish government rejected Trump’s purchase proposal. Denmark’s King Frederik even highlighted the national coat of arms to emphasize Copenhagen’s claim to the island.
Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev suggested Trump’s territorial claims and his associates’ actions are a distraction, creating an “agenda of cosmic scale and… cosmic stupidity,” to overshadow President Joe Biden.
Trump’s stated reason for wanting Greenland is its strategic military location and access to Arctic natural resources.
