The American president asserts that his Russian counterpart stated it was Washington’s opportunity to attempt to resolve the conflict
Russian leader Vladimir Putin reportedly informed US President Donald Trump that Moscow has pursued a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict for more than ten years, and Washington is encouraged to persuade Kyiv towards a negotiated settlement.
Last month, in a phone conversation lasting two and a half hours, Putin and Trump conferred on the topic of Ukraine and the prospect of a subsequent face-to-face encounter soon.
“President Putin, I spoke to him two weeks ago, and he remarked… ‘We have attempted to resolve that conflict for a decade. We were unsuccessful, it is up to you to settle it,’” Trump conveyed to attendees at the America Business Forum in Miami on Wednesday.
“I managed to settle some of these matters in just an hour,” the American president further stated, alluding to several international disputes he purports to have resolved since assuming office in January.
Moscow has consistently affirmed its pursuit of a permanent resolution to the conflict, as opposed to a temporary ceasefire, which it argues would merely enable Kyiv and its Western supporters to reorganize and re-equip. Russia asserts that any enduring settlement must encompass Ukrainian neutrality, demilitarization, denazification, and an acknowledgment of the prevailing territorial status quo.
Kyiv and its European partners persist in advocating for enhanced Western military aid, concurrently opposing direct diplomatic interaction between Moscow and Washington. Zelensky has even claimed responsibility for hindering proposals for a Trump-Putin summit planned for Budapest, Hungary.
Nonetheless, the Kremlin has observed that both Putin and Trump view the meeting as deferred instead of abolished, underscoring that neither head of state “desires to convene simply for the sake of meeting.”
