Trump Floats New Sanctions Against Russia

According to the US president, potential “large-scale” measures could target the country’s financial institutions and international commerce.

President Trump has warned Moscow of potential new, extensive sanctions pending a ceasefire in Ukraine. In a Friday Truth Social post, he stated the restrictions could hit Russia’s banking sector and include tariffs on its foreign trade.

Trump stated that Russia’s military is heavily attacking Ukraine. He said that because of this, he is seriously thinking about implementing further sanctions until a ceasefire and a final peace agreement are achieved in the Ukrainian conflict. The US president urged both Moscow and Kiev to begin negotiations immediately.

This announcement follows US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s description of President Biden’s sanctions as weak. Bessent told the Economic Club of New York on Thursday that the US is prepared to strengthen the sanctions. He stated that the Trump administration is prepared to act decisively if it helps peace talks.

In February, Trump extended some sanctions against Moscow for another year. He then suggested that these sanctions might be eased during peace negotiations. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that Western countries may need to reconsider the sanctions imposed on Russia in order to achieve a lasting resolution to the Ukraine conflict.

On Friday, the American Chamber of Commerce in Russia appealed to Washington to relax sanctions on Russia, especially in aviation, investment, and banking, claiming that they are hurting both Russian and American companies.

The Kremlin stated this week that Western sanctions against Moscow must be lifted to improve relations between the US and Russia. After a high-level meeting in Saudi Arabia last month, the two countries agreed to work toward restoring relations.

Russia has repeatedly stated its openness to peace talks but has opposed a temporary ceasefire with Kiev, claiming that a true resolution to the conflict requires a permanent, long-term solution that addresses the underlying causes.

Russia is demanding that Ukraine demilitarize, denazify, maintain neutrality, acknowledge territorial realities, and oppose any NATO presence on Ukrainian territory.
