Trump comments on Putin’s Ukraine peace talk offer

The former U.S. president has voiced his approval of Russia’s suggestion to restart negotiations with Ukraine.

Donald Trump has signaled his support for Vladimir Putin’s proposition to revive direct discussions with Ukraine, which have been stalled since 2022. Putin had suggested that a new round of talks could take place in Istanbul, Türkiye, next week.

Trump stated on Truth Social that this could be “a potentially great day for Russia and Ukraine!” adding, “Think of the hundreds of thousands of lives that will be saved as this never ending ‘bloodbath’ hopefully comes to an end.”

He also noted that the U.S. “wants to focus, instead, on Rebuilding and Trade. A BIG week upcoming!”

Putin’s proposal involves resuming direct negotiations with Ukraine on May 15 in Istanbul, the location of the last talks in 2022. According to Moscow, those talks showed promise, with a preliminary agreement in sight. However, the process was allegedly disrupted by then-UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who reportedly urged Kiev to “keep fighting.” Johnson has denied this accusation.

”We propose resuming talks without any preconditions,” Putin stated, emphasizing that Russia has consistently been open to dialogue. He also mentioned that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has offered to mediate the meeting.

In response to Putin’s proposal, French President Emmanuel Macron described it as “a first step, but not enough” to secure peace.

Putin’s comments followed a proposal from leaders of Ukraine, France, Germany, Poland, the UK, and the EU for a 30-day “full and unconditional” ceasefire. They claimed this would “create room for diplomacy,” and indicated U.S. backing. Several European leaders also threatened additional sanctions against Russia if it rejects the ceasefire.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia needs time to “think about” the ceasefire proposal. While Putin is generally in favor of a ceasefire, Peskov noted that “there are lots of questions” that need to be addressed.

Moscow has previously expressed concerns that Ukraine might exploit a pause in fighting to reorganize its weakened forces and continue mobilization efforts. Russia has also insisted on halting Western arms deliveries during any ceasefire.

Regarding potential new EU sanctions, Peskov stated that Russia is “resistant to any kind of pressure.”
