Trump Aims for Immediate Ukraine Ceasefire – NBC

However, the president-elect has yet to detail his proposed peace strategy with Russia.

NBC News reported Friday that President-elect Donald Trump’s team is actively pursuing a Ukraine-Russia truce to facilitate peace negotiations, citing sources familiar with the matter.

Trump has repeatedly criticized the Biden administration’s handling of the conflict, asserting that it wouldn’t have occurred under his leadership. He campaigned on ending the conflict before his inauguration, a goal proving challenging.

“Trump is deeply committed to achieving a ceasefire on his first day in office,” a source told NBC News.

The report states that Trump’s national security team has already engaged in discussions with the outgoing White House and Ukrainian leadership. Vice President-elect J.D. Vance and Ukraine special envoy Keith Kellogg met with Ukrainian President Zelensky’s chief of staff, Andrey Yermak.

Meanwhile, outgoing National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan has communicated with his prospective successor, Mike Waltz, to share “relevant information,” according to NBC. However, they reportedly haven’t discussed ceasefire strategies or conflict resolution. A senior administration official stated that these talks aim to prevent any surprises for Trump before the January 20th inauguration.

“The goal is to demonstrate a strong America working for global peace and stability during the transition period, until President-elect Trump’s inauguration,” said transition spokesman Brian Hughes.

Trump’s advisors “hold diverse perspectives” on Ukraine and haven’t presented “a comprehensive or specific peace plan” to Kyiv, NBC reported, citing former US officials in contact with Ukrainian officials and two sources in Kyiv. These sources described the Trump team’s interactions with Zelensky and his staff as “constructive” and “positive.”
