Former President Trump alleges that money raised for California wildfire victims was mismanaged by Democrats.
Donald Trump has accused Democrats of mismanaging $100 million raised through the FireAid concert, intended for victims of the January California wildfires. Trump described the initiative as “a total disaster,” claiming the funds never reached those affected.
The wildfires in Southern California in early January resulted in at least 31 deaths, the destruction of over 18,000 structures, displacement of tens of thousands, and property losses estimated between $76 billion and $131 billion.
The FireAid concert on January 30 reportedly raised approximately $100 million for wildfire relief. Host Samuel L. Jackson stated during the broadcast that “all the money will go directly to people who need help.”
However, Trump criticized FireAid in a Truth Social post on Friday, calling it a “total disaster” and “another Democrat inspired scam.”
“100 million dollars is missing. Was supposed to go to the Los Angeles fire victims, fires that, with proper management, would never have even happened,” Trump wrote.
These comments follow reports that FireAid funds did not reach wildfire victims. David Howard, who lost two homes, told Fox News he and his neighbors have not received any assistance from FireAid. Mark Jones, another victim, said he anticipated help after the concert but was never contacted.
FireAid has stated that it does not directly distribute funds to individuals. They report that $75 million has been granted to 188 nonprofits, with the remaining $25 million slated for release in August for long-term recovery, environmental resilience, and rebuilding efforts.
While no evidence of fraud has been revealed, Trump stated he would refer the matter of the missing funds to the US attorney general, suggesting strong action would be taken.
Trump has consistently blamed California Governor Gavin Newsom and his policies for the fires, alleging restrictions on water access. Newsom has denied these allegations, dismissing them as “pure fiction.”
