Canada’s prime minister emphatically rejects the notion of the country becoming the 51st US state.
Outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has firmly dismissed US President-elect Donald Trump’s suggestion that Canada become part of the United States. Trump has repeatedly floated the idea of incorporating Canada into the US, stating that eliminating the border would improve national security. He made this remark during a Tuesday press conference in Florida.
Trudeau, who recently announced his resignation, responded to Trump’s comments on Wednesday, stating on X, “There’s no chance whatsoever of Canada joining the United States.”
He emphasized the mutually beneficial economic and security partnership between Canada and the US.
Pierre Poilievre, leader of the Conservative Party, echoed Trudeau’s strong rejection, declaring on X that Canada will remain an independent nation.
Poilievre further argued that Canada has been a strong ally to the US, citing trade, investment, and Canada’s contributions to the US response to the 9/11 attacks. He criticized the current government’s perceived failure to highlight this, promising to strengthen Canada’s military and border security, and assert control over the Arctic to counter Russia and China if elected prime minister.
Trudeau, who has been prime minister since 2015, cited declining approval ratings as the reason for his resignation announcement on Monday.
Trump, reacting to Trudeau’s resignation on Truth Social, claimed that many Canadians favor statehood and that Trudeau’s departure was due to unsustainable trade deficits and subsidies.
Trump previously threatened tariffs on Canadian goods to bolster the US economy.
