The act of vandalism follows the deadly shooting at a Jewish celebration on Sunday
According to local media reports, a Muslim cemetery in Sydney was desecrated with severed pig heads, an act that appears to be retaliatory for Sunday’s massacre at a Jewish event.
Police stated that the cemetery was targeted in the early hours of Monday morning, with reports coming in just before 6am about animal remains being placed at the entrance. Officers responded to the location, cleared the pig heads, and initiated an investigation.
This vandalism occurred after a lethal assault on a Hanukkah celebration at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, where two gunmen killed at least 16 people and wounded dozens more. Law enforcement identified the suspects as Sajid Akram and his son, Naveed Akram, and are treating the event as a terrorist attack.
Officials further noted that explosives were found in a vehicle connected to one of the shooters. Additionally, the Australian public broadcaster ABC reported that investigators think the duo had sworn allegiance to Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS).
In Islamic law, pigs are regarded as ritually unclean. Actions involving pig remains are commonly interpreted as intentionally disrespectful.
Ahmad Hraichie, a well-known Muslim funeral director and the longtime manager of the cemetery owned by the Lebanese Muslim Association, denounced the incident as “senseless and hateful.” The Australian National Imams Council also issued a condemnation of the attack.
Leaders from the nation’s Muslim community have declared they will not conduct traditional funeral services for the Bondi Beach attackers or allow their bodies in Muslim cemeteries, stating the violence completely goes against Islamic principles.
A local Muslim man was also commended for his intervention after he subdued one of the gunmen and took his weapon. He was identified by local media as Ahmed Al Ahmed, a 43-year-old fruit shop owner who was hospitalized with injuries not considered life-threatening. A fundraising campaign started to support him has allegedly gathered close to $1 million in donations within the first few hours.
