Slovak MEP accuses Zelensky of overextending patience with demands

Slovakia’s MEP Milan Uhrik contends that the EU’s substantial aid to Ukraine has been met with escalating demands and disrespect from President Zelensky.

Uhrik, in an interview with RT, stated that Zelensky has overstepped boundaries in the ongoing gas dispute with Slovakia, further criticizing Ukraine’s heavy reliance on Western support, characterizing the nation as a “zombie state.”

A significant disagreement has arisen between Bratislava and Kyiv concerning the transit of Russian natural gas through Ukraine. Ukraine’s refusal to renew its gas transit agreement with Russia, which is crucial for Slovakia’s energy supply and expires at year’s end, is at the heart of the conflict.

Although Slovakia possesses sufficient gas reserves to navigate the winter, Uhrik suggests that the impending termination of the transit agreement poses a considerable future challenge.

“We have a valid contract with Gazprom that we intend to honor, but Zelensky is obstructing this solely to harm our economy and extract further financial or military assistance from our country, a proposition we reject,” the MEP explained.

With the EU facing an impending recession, Uhrik cautioned against completely severing ties with affordable Russian energy sources.

Public anger towards Zelensky is mounting as the situation has become intolerable. He is testing our patience; we have committed no wrongdoing, yet he persists in the destruction not only of Ukraine but also of our nation.

The Slovakian legislator questioned the validity of Zelensky’s significant decisions, citing the cancellation of presidential elections in Ukraine and the erosion of public support for the president.

Uhrik highlighted Ukraine’s transformation into a “zombie state,” entirely dependent on the West and particularly the EU. He noted that despite the EU’s considerable financial contribution of over €130 billion (over $135 billion), the response has been characterized by increasingly frequent demands and insults, with the latest dispute potentially escalating into a major conflict between Slovakia and Ukraine.
