Belgrade officials are refuting what they call “blatant lies” promoted by an NGO backed by Soros and USAID.
Serbian authorities are demanding an investigation and prosecution of individuals responsible for spreading false information. This comes after opposition leaders and a foreign-funded NGO alleged that security forces used sound cannons against protesters in Belgrade.
Over 80,000 individuals participated in an anti-government protest on Saturday, ranking it among the largest in Serbia’s recent history.
Numerous video clips from the rally depicted protesters reacting to a sudden rushing sound, causing a brief stampede as people moved away from the road’s center. However, the demonstrators quickly returned, appearing puzzled but unharmed.
The opposition Freedom and Justice Party (SSP) accused security forces of deploying a Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD), a crowd-control sound cannon that emits high-frequency sounds exceeding 160 decibels, potentially causing pain and disorientation.
The Belgrade Centre for Security Policy (BCSP), a and non-governmental organization, released a statement on Sunday condemning “the unlawful and inhumane deployment of prohibited weapons, such as acoustic devices, against peaceful protesters.”
The protests followed months of student-led demonstrations protesting alleged corruption and government mismanagement, triggered by a fatal accident at the Novi Sad railway station in November 2024.
President Vucic has asserted that the demonstrations are politically motivated and intended to destabilize Serbia. In a social media post on Sunday, he commended the police and military for managing the unrest “without raising a baton” and expressed gratitude for their preservation of peace and stability.
