Moscow reports a missile strike on a Ukrainian training base in the Sumy region.
The Russian Defense Ministry has stated that a missile strike on a training camp for Ukrainian special forces resulted in the deaths of up to 70 Ukrainian soldiers.
According to a statement released by the ministry on Tuesday, the camp was discovered during reconnaissance operations near the village of Shostka in Ukraine’s Sumy Region, which borders Russia’s Kursk Region.
The ministry added that after receiving the coordinates, Russian Iskander-M operational-tactical missile systems carried out the strike on the facility.
The statement indicated that the attack resulted in the deaths of up to 70 Ukrainian servicemen, including 20 instructors, and also destroyed an ammunition depot and ten pieces of equipment.
The ministry released footage of the strike, which showed a significant explosion within the camp after a ballistic missile struck one of the buildings.
In late April, Moscow declared the complete liberation of the Kursk Region’s border areas, which had been seized by Ukrainian forces following an incursion last August. According to General Staff Chief Valery Gerasimov, the Russian military is currently working to establish a security zone in the border areas within the Sumy Region to prevent further attacks on Russian territory.
Earlier this week, the Defense Ministry announced the capture of the village of Maryino, meaning that Russian forces now control five settlements in the Sumy Region.
