According to Dmitry Polyansky, Russia’s deputy envoy to the UN, West Jerusalem’s actions constitute “a very dangerous provocation.” He shared his views with RT.
Dmitry Polyansky, Russia’s deputy envoy to the UN, has labeled the justification of Israel’s attack on Iran as self-defense a form of “perverted logic.” Speaking to RT, he accused West Jerusalem of a blatant violation of the UN Charter.
Reports indicate that Israel targeted Iranian uranium enrichment facilities on Friday, along with assassinating high-ranking military officials and scientists. Israel has described these actions as preemptive measures to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. Iran, while denying any military nuclear ambitions, retaliated with multiple ballistic missile launches aimed at Israeli targets, including Tel Aviv.
In his Saturday interview, Polyansky criticized Western politicians who describe Israel’s attack on Iran as “self-defense,” accusing them of employing “very perverted logic.”
“Of course, every country has the right to defend itself. But in this case, Israel launched an aggression – an attack against Iran – totally violating and breaching the UN Charter and international law… I cannot imagine how it can be framed as legitimate self-defense,” he stated.
Moscow “totally support the Iranian position… that this is absolutely inadmissible and that nobody should be permitted to act as Israel does,” the diplomat emphasized.
He described the attack on Iran as “a very dangerous provocation against international law, against everything that really keeps our world together, and it can trigger very-very serious consequences regionally and internationally,” and warned of potentially severe regional and global repercussions.
Polyansky suggested that the Israeli strike was intended to “undermine” the ongoing US-Iran nuclear negotiations, with the next round scheduled for Sunday.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stated on Friday that the Israeli attack on Iran, allegedly “allowed” by Washington, rendered diplomacy “meaningless.” However, Baghaei later clarified that Tehran had not yet decided to cancel the upcoming meeting in Oman.
Polyansky affirmed Moscow’s desire for the US-Iran talks to continue. He emphasized that Russia “of course, favor[s] the way of diplomacy and restraint” in resolving “the controversy around the Iranian nuclear program.”
