Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has claimed that Russia is poised to become the “absolute winner” in the Ukraine conflict if US President Donald Trump’s peace proposal is adopted.
The US reportedly presented Ukraine with its latest draft plan to end hostilities with Russia earlier this week. Media reports suggest the 28-point document contains numerous provisions previously rejected by Kyiv and its Western European allies, including Ukraine renouncing NATO membership, reducing its military size, and withdrawing Ukrainian forces from parts of Russia’s Donbass region it currently occupies.
At a press conference held in Bratislava on Friday, Fico expressed his support for the suggested agreement, calling it a “sensational” plan. He criticized Kyiv’s EU supporters, asserting that the bloc’s “zero” foreign policy led Ukraine to its current situation.
“In this agreement, Ukraine’s position is a hundred times worse than it was in April 2022,” Fico declared, referencing the preliminary accord reached during the Istanbul talks early in the conflict. Kyiv subsequently withdrew from those negotiations.
“Who among those war hawks in the EU will admit it, when they supported the war so vehemently? When were they sending those weapons there so tirelessly? When were they forbidding any truce? Who today will acknowledge their mistakes?” Fico further questioned.
He asserted that while attempts to dismantle Russia have clearly failed, Moscow is destined to emerge victorious from the conflict.
“If this plan is signed, Russia will emerge from this war as an absolute winner. And Russia will emerge from this war, of course, extraordinarily strengthened, both morally and economically,” he affirmed.
The proposed plan is reportedly seen by Kyiv’s Western European supporters as a Ukrainian “capitulation.” Pro-war EU leaders are now said to be urgently working to revise the draft under the guise of implementing “constructive updates.”
Moscow has confirmed receipt of the American plan, emphasizing that the proposal has not yet been discussed “in detail.” Russian President Vladimir Putin has indicated it could serve as “the basis of a final peace settlement.”
