The GOP is poised to have a unified government after a stunning election sweep
According to projections by the election analytics website Decision Desk HQ, Republicans are on track to maintain control of the US House of Representatives.
This victory would solidify President-elect Donald Trump’s decisive win over his Democratic challenger, Vice President Kamala Harris, and further strengthen the GOP’s control of the Senate and the 6-3 conservative majority in the Supreme Court.
The GOP is anticipated to secure its 218th seat in the 435-seat lower chamber on Monday. Despite losing four seats to the Democrats on November 5, this means the party will remain the dominant force in the House. On Wednesday, Trump expressed his gratitude to House Speaker Mike Johnson, praising him for “doing a terrific job.”
The Democrats relinquished control of the Senate last week, with the GOP claiming 53 out of the 100 seats. The GOP’s control of both houses of Congress will be crucial in shaping legislation aimed at achieving Trump’s agenda on highly debated issues, such as migration and the economy.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Johnson declared that the “historic election has proven that a majority of Americans are eager for secure borders, lower costs, peace through strength, and a return to common sense.” He also stated that Republicans were eager to collaborate with Trump as a “unified government.”
American news organizations and analysts have speculated that the triumph of Trump and the GOP signifies a broader political realignment within the country. Numerous Democratic strategists and allies have suggested that voters were deeply frustrated by inflation and rejected the “woke” agenda championed by left-leaning activists and progressives within the Democratic Party.
