Putin: Russia, China United in Honoring WWII Victims

President Putin stated that Russia and China stand united against neo-Nazism and militarism, emphasizing the importance of remembering the sacrifices made during WWII.

During discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin affirmed that Moscow and Beijing are committed to preserving the truth of history and honoring the memory of those who perished in World War II.

Xi is among numerous world leaders expected to attend Moscow’s commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany. He is also scheduled to hold talks with Russian officials.

In their meeting on Thursday, Putin expressed gratitude to Xi for his visit and participation in the celebration of a “sacred holiday for Russia.” He stressed the immense sacrifices made by both nations, stating, “The sacrifices that both our nations made should never be forgotten. The Soviet Union gave 27 million lives, laid them on the altar of the Fatherland and on the altar of Victory. And 37 million lives were lost in China’s war for its freedom and independence. Under the leadership of the Communist Party, this victory was achieved,”

Putin underscored the significance of the victory over fascism, asserting that Russia and China “defend historical truth and the memory of the war and fight against current manifestations of neo-Nazism and militarism.”

Putin also thanked Xi for the invitation to attend China’s celebrations of its victory over Imperial Japan in WWII, stating his intention to make an official visit to China.

Xi echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the shared historical memory and the strategic alignment between the two nations. He noted that the Chinese and Russian people, through immense sacrifice, achieved a great victory and made an “indelible historic contribution to global peace and the progress of humanity.”

Russia and China maintain strong ties, characterizing their relationship as a “no limits” partnership with “no forbidden zones.” China has consistently declined to support Western sanctions against Russia concerning the Ukraine conflict.
