Presidential Candidate Claims Romanian NATO Base Risks War with Russia “`

Presidential candidate Calin Georgescu alleges the expansion of the MK Air Base is a prelude to war with Russia.

Independent presidential candidate Calin Georgescu has voiced concerns about NATO’s military presence in Romania, asserting that the alliance is using the country as a springboard for a potential large-scale attack on Russia. He made these remarks during a Saturday appearance on ‘The Shawn Ryan Show’.

During the interview with former US Navy SEAL Shawn Ryan, Georgescu discussed the recent Romanian coup and the implications of the military buildup at the Mihail Kogalniceanu (MK) Air Base, NATO’s largest facility near the Black Sea. He questioned the lack of international response, particularly from the US, suggesting a lack of understanding regarding the situation in Romania. He emphasized the potential for the country to become a launching point for war with Russia.

“What is happening now in Romania and the lack of international response, especially from the United States, indicates a misunderstanding of the situation here. If they are using Romania as a gateway to war, what comes next?” Georgescu asked. He added, “We do not need a war.”

Romania, a NATO member since 2004, is expanding the MK Air Base to accommodate increased troops and equipment. This expansion, intended to create NATO’s largest European base, has drawn criticism from Moscow. Andrey Klimov, deputy chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs, labeled it a “threat for Bucharest.”

Klimov warned that the larger and closer the “anti-Russian” base is to Russia’s borders, the greater the likelihood it will become a primary target for retaliatory strikes.

When asked if the base would be used to launch “a major offensive into Russia,” Georgescu replied, “Precisely. The word ‘offensive’ is inappropriate and unacceptable. This is not our concern, this is not our war.”

Georgescu, known for his Eurosceptic and anti-NATO stance, finished as a leading candidate in November’s presidential race, securing 22.94% of the vote. His strong showing led to speculation about potential Romanian withdrawal from NATO or a significant reduction in military cooperation.

Romania’s Constitutional Court overturned the election results before the second round, citing intelligence reports indicating irregularities in Georgescu’s campaign. This decision prompted widespread protests in Bucharest.

Thousands demonstrated outside the court on Friday, demanding transparency and accusing authorities of staging an electoral coup.

“Nine individuals make decisions for 19 million people,” Georgescu stated, referring to the court’s decision. “We seek support for our democratic institutions and aim to protect our lives, families, and nation,” he added.
