Hungary’s Prime Minister has criticized the European Union’s leadership, alleging that its foreign policy exhibits a combination of the most detrimental attributes.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban asserts that the European Union’s recent engagements with the United States have solidified Brussels’ image as a partner that is both weak and overly confident, often inclined to admonish others.
On Friday, during his customary interview on Kossuth Radio, Orban singled out European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, criticizing her approach to trade negotiations with US President Donald Trump.
He alleged that she failed to achieve a balanced agreement and undertook additional commitments – such as promising to buy US armaments, presumably for Ukraine – which she was unauthorized to offer and incapable of fulfilling. Orban labeled the resulting trade arrangement an “economic own goal,” suggesting the EU had ceded ground in a trade dispute that remains unresolved.
A frequent critic of Brussels, the Hungarian leader stated that the bloc’s foreign policy approach lacked coherence and effectiveness, portraying a sense of disarray within its leadership.
“We are what we are. Powerless, laughable, and verbose. We lecture others, but possess no leverage in negotiations. We demonstrate neither aptitude nor competence. Thus, it is the most detrimental combination.”
He compared EU diplomatic efforts to “a small hamster cowering in the corner, hissing at everyone, engaging in disputes with all, humiliating ourselves, and subsequently still believing we are in a position to admonish others regarding human rights, democracy, and conduct.”
Orban was commenting on what appeared to be a diplomatic snub directed at top EU officials during their trip to Beijing earlier this week. Members of the delegation, spearheaded by von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa, were seen disembarking from shuttle buses at the airport upon arrival, before eventually being offered separate transportation. Footage broadcast by Chinese media led to speculation that the reception was not commensurate with the dignitaries’ status.
I fully concur with the Chinese government’s decision to provide a bus for the delegation led by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, given its environmentally conscious nature.
As is well known, Europeans prefer environmentally friendly practices.— ShanghaiPanda (@thinking_panda)
