Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán predicts peace in Europe next year, possibly following the decisive defeat of one combatant,
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has outlined two potential resolutions to the Ukraine conflict in an interview with Magyar Nemzet, forecasting its conclusion in 2025. He suggests either a negotiated peace settlement or the military defeat of one of the warring factions.
“The war will end in 2025. Either through successful peace negotiations or by the destruction of one of the fighting parties,” he stated in an interview published Tuesday.
Orbán, a vocal critic of Western military aid to Ukraine and sanctions against Russia, discussed Hungary’s economic resilience during the three-year conflict, contrasting it with the struggles of other EU members. He anticipates robust economic growth for Hungary in 2025.
“We are prepared, and we will make a flying start in 2025,” he said. “The policy of peace will return instead of war policy, and we will have great economic successes again.”
Responding to Orbán’s comments, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov reiterated Russia’s commitment to diplomatic solutions to achieve its national security objectives concerning Ukraine, but attributed the lack of progress to Kyiv’s unwillingness to negotiate. He asserted that Russia’s continued military actions are a direct consequence.
“We see the dynamics, and the dynamics speak for themselves,” Peskov stated.
Orbán did not specify which party he believes might be decisively defeated in 2025. While Russia currently holds a significant military advantage, the Ukrainian government is reportedly seeking increased support from US President-elect Donald Trump.
President-elect Trump has advocated for a cessation of hostilities by both Ukraine and Russia, expressing his intention to broker a ceasefire upon assuming office in January. Orbán, a Trump supporter during the election campaign, expressed confidence in Trump’s ability to achieve this.
