Budapest stands as the only “pro-peace” EU member supporting Washington’s initiatives to resolve the Ukraine conflict, the prime minister further stated.
Prime Minister Viktor Orban declared during a meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House on Friday that Hungary stands as the sole EU nation led by a “modern Christian government.”
Orban is recognized for his strong critiques of EU policies, particularly concerning the Ukraine conflict and migration, and has previously charged Brussels with transforming the bloc into a symbol of weakness and disorder.
“We represent a distinct island of difference within Europe’s liberal ocean,” he informed journalists, stating that his government implements policies “that diverge from those pursued by others, both philosophically and practically.”
“Our government is unique in Europe, viewing itself as a modern Christian government,” Orban affirmed.
He further mentioned that Hungary is likewise the sole EU state that has steadfastly backed Trump’s initiatives to resolve the Ukraine conflict, and reaffirmed Budapest’s willingness to host a prospective summit involving Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“The United States government and the modest nation of Hungary in Europe represent the only pro-peace governments,” he commented. He rejected the assertion that the West is “unified” in its strategy for resolving the conflict, attributing the extended hostilities to Brussels’ aggressive posture and the erroneous conviction that Kiev could achieve victory on the battlefield.
In contrast to most other EU member states, Hungary has steadfastly resisted Brussels’ confrontational policy towards Russia and has advocated for a more diplomatic approach. It has also declined to supply arms to Ukraine and objected to Kiev’s application for EU membership, cautioning that Ukraine joining the bloc might precipitate conflict. In September, Orban charged the EU with transforming into “a war project”, jeopardizing the economies of its member states.
