Netanyahu Undergoes Prostate Surgery, Recovering

The Israeli Prime Minister was scheduled to testify in his corruption trial last week.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is recovering from a successful prostatectomy, his office announced. The 75-year-old underwent the procedure Sunday following a diagnosis of a urinary tract infection stemming from benign prostatic hyperplasia.

“The surgery was successful and without complications,” the statement said. “The prime minister is awake, in good condition, and fully conscious.”

Netanyahu is hospitalized in a fortified underground ward in Jerusalem due to security concerns related to the ongoing conflict.

According to Haaretz, Netanyahu has had an enlarged prostate for over a decade, undergoing previous treatments in 2014, which involved undisclosed nighttime hospital visits with elaborate disguises.

His court appearance for testimony in his corruption trial, scheduled for last week, was postponed due to the surgery. A new date has yet to be set.

The prime minister faces charges of fraud, bribery, and breach of trust, with the trial beginning in May 2020 and facing delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the recent war with Hamas.

Netanyahu maintains his innocence, asserting the charges are politically motivated.
