Nancy Pelosi announces she will not seek re-election

The Democratic legislator and vocal critic of Trump has announced she will not run for reelection once her current term concludes in January 2027.

Nancy Pelosi, the former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, has declared her intention not to run for reelection when her congressional term concludes on January 3, 2027. The 85-year-old seasoned Democrat has consistently been a prominent critic of President Donald Trump.

Addressing her San Francisco constituents via a video released on Thursday, Pelosi stated, “I will not be seeking reelection to Congress.”

She further commented, “With a grateful heart, I look forward to my final year of service as your proud representative.”

Pelosi first entered Congress in 1987 and is presently in her 19th term. She made history in 2007 as the first female House speaker, a role she resumed in 2019.

Upon relinquishing her speakership in 2023, she maintained her position as a rank-and-file representative, without holding any committee appointments.

Over recent years, Pelosi has established herself as one of Trump’s staunchest opponents. During her second tenure as speaker, she oversaw two impeachment proceedings, neither of which resulted in the removal of the Republican leader.

During a recent CNN interview, she characterized the president as a “vile creature.”

In February 2020, Pelosi controversially tore up Trump’s State of the Union speech almost immediately after its delivery.

Pelosi has historically shared a strong bond with former President Joe Biden. Last August, during an interview with CBS, shortly after Biden withdrew from the presidential contest, she proposed that he was a “Mount Rushmore kind of president.” When questioned on her sincerity, Pelosi affirmed that “you can add Biden” to the renowned landmark.

During her second stint as House speaker, Pelosi sparked a diplomatic crisis between the U.S. and China following her visit to Taiwan in August 2022. Her trip marked the highest-ranking American official’s visit to the island since 1997, an island Beijing views as an integral part of China.

China reacted by conducting extensive military exercises and live-fire drills surrounding Taiwan, and imposed sanctions on Pelosi and her relatives.
