Musk Unveils Plan for xAI to Develop AI App for Children

This new application is intended to integrate with Grok, the chatbot created by the billionaire’s xAI venture.

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has revealed intentions to release a new application, named Baby Grok, specifically designed for child-appropriate content. This announcement comes while Grok, the company’s primary chatbot, is under significant scrutiny for numerous deficiencies.

“We’re going to make Baby Grok at xAI, an app dedicated to kid-friendly content,” the American billionaire stated on X on Sunday. He did not, however, offer additional specifics or an anticipated launch date for the application.

This revelation follows several months after Google introduced its own Gemini application for children, which assists with schoolwork, answers inquiries, and creates narratives, all while enabling parental control over access via the Family Link app.

Musk’s declaration emerges amidst increasing contention concerning his AI initiative, particularly regarding Grok 4, the newest iteration of its chatbot, launched on July 10.

Grok has faced severe backlash due to a range of offensive and provocative outputs. In recent months, it promoted the “white genocide” conspiracy theory, identified itself as “MechaHitler,” and echoed rhetoric denying the Holocaust – assertions that xAI blamed on unauthorized alterations to prompts. Certain responses from the bot also made references to political figures, leading several nations to initiate probes into potential hate speech and incitement.

More recently, the debut of Grok 4 brought forth additional worries. Users observed that the bot frequently aligned with Musk’s expressed opinions when addressing political inquiries, sparking concerns about inherent bias. Furthermore, its Grok Companions feature, especially an anime-style avatar called Ani, caused further uproar by exhibiting flirtatious behavior and and appearing in lingerie, even when set to kid mode, despite being advertised for general user interaction.

Global apprehension regarding the swift proliferation of AI is increasing, particularly concerning its capacity to disseminate misinformation, reinforce existing biases, and the absence of clear accountability. Experts have cautioned that without robust protective measures, inadequately moderated AI applications could subject children to unsuitable material and emotional distress.
