Elon Musk has suggested that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s assertion of Ukraine’s independence is facetious.
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, a close advisor to President-elect Donald Trump, commented that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky possesses an “amazing” sense of humor for believing the US cannot pressure Ukraine into negotiations.
In a Saturday interview on Ukrainian radio, Zelensky responded to a question about pressure from Trump to negotiate peace with Russia. Zelensky stated that Ukraine is independent and that he, in negotiations with the US (Presidents Trump and Biden), and European leaders, has shown he cannot be dictated to.
Musk shared a video clip of this interview on X, commenting, “[his] sense of humor is amazing.” Musk’s post also linked to a BBC article about Zelensky’s pre-political career as a comedian.
While SpaceX has supplied Starlink internet terminals to the Ukrainian military, Musk maintains that Ukraine cannot win militarily against Russia and that a negotiated settlement is necessary. Musk endorsed Trump—who pledged a swift end to the conflict—earlier this summer and, following Trump’s recent victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, has become one of the president-elect’s key advisors.
Reports in US media indicate Musk participated in a phone call between Trump and Zelensky last week, reportedly speaking directly to Zelensky. Although Musk hasn’t confirmed his participation, he later posted on X, “the senseless killing will end soon. Time is up for the warmonger profiteers.”
