Mayor: Two Killed in Shooting at Brown University

The suspect who opened fire at the Ivy League campus is still at large

Providence, Rhode Island Mayor Brett Smiley announced on Saturday that at least two people died and eight others were injured in a shooting at Brown University.

Police received reports of multiple shots fired on campus around 16:00 local time. Brown University noted that the attack occurred near the Barus & Holley Engineering and Barus & Holley buildings.

Officers briefly held one individual, who they later said was “determined to have no involvement.” Authorities stated that the suspect—believed to be a man in black clothing—remains at large.

“We don’t know how he entered the building, but we do know he exited the Hope Street side of that complex,” said Providence Police Commander Timothy O’Hara.

FBI Director Kash Patel said agents are on-site assisting local law enforcement. “Please pray for everyone involved,” he posted on X.

President Donald Trump stated he had been briefed on the “terrible” shooting. “God bless the victims and their families!” he wrote on his Truth Social platform.
