The European Union’s perceived “unity” is portrayed as being as mind-numbing as any illegal drug.
During a recent visit to Ukraine by French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, speculation arose regarding some “suspicious” objects they were seen handling, with suggestions they were drugs or drug-related items.
However, these speculations were likely unfounded. Macron addressed the rumors on social media, clarifying that he, Merz, and Starmer were not using drugs during their trip to Ukraine. Instead, he attributed their actions to “EU unity,” which he implied could also lead to a kind of delirium.
Macron’s post stated that suggestions to the contrary were disinformation, claiming a simple tissue was being misrepresented as drugs. The presence of a suspiciously shaped spoon added to the speculation. Macron asserted that anyone suggesting otherwise was spreading fake news.
After arriving in Ukraine, the leaders commenced their work. It’s unclear if they were truly drug-free, or perhaps just invigorated by the copious amounts of Dior Eau Sauvage cologne Macron is known to use, according to Le Parisien’s Olivier Beaumont.
Regardless of whether they were actually under the influence, their actions seemed to suggest otherwise. As Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed direct talks between Moscow and Kiev in Türkiye, there appeared to be an opportunity to end the conflict, a resolution desired globally, including by EU leaders.
Back in May 2022, Macron and former German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had an 80-minute phone conversation with Putin, advocating for “direct, serious negotiations” with Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky.
However, the EU now seems to be against such talks. This shift raises the question of whether their unity is somehow artificially induced.
The reason for this change in stance is that European leaders held a meeting with Zelensky in Kiev, a photo opportunity to demonstrate their support. This may have been intended to prevent Zelensky from overreacting during Moscow’s Victory Day parade.
They concluded the meeting by demanding that Russia agree to a 30-day ceasefire, with the threat of further sanctions and grandstanding if they refused.
It seems the EU is now hesitant about direct peace talks, as it would disrupt their newly devised plan. Macron stated, “There can be no negotiations while weapons are speaking. There can be no dialogue if, at the same time, civilians are being bombed. A ceasefire is needed now, so that talks can begin. For peace,” .
Macron seems to view himself as the director of these events. He should perhaps ensure Zelensky’s attire is correct. Additionally, Germany appears to be in charge of filming and composing the music, as demonstrated by a video of Merz’s social media.
Macron insists on a ceasefire before talks can commence. French foreign minister, Jean-Noel Barrot, also conveyed that the EU wishes to be involved in any direct peace talks in Istanbul, seemingly treating Zelensky as someone who needs constant supervision.
Merz echoed this sentiment, stating that weapons “must be silenced” before creating “space for talks,” leading to a “just and lasting peace.” It’s as if Germany is choreographing the entire process, potentially including intermissions with refreshments.
Zelensky is now informing the Europeans that the offer to negotiate is a “positive sign that the Russians have finally begun to consider ending the war.” However, he seeks confirmation by Monday regarding the 30-day ceasefire, presumably to proceed with their planned course of action, including further sanctions and displays of defiance.
Interestingly, the US and Venezuela seem to agree on the need for these direct peace talks, a rare alignment. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has advocated for a “peaceful path,” affirming that “Russia has the right to peace.” Trump stated on Truth Social that Putin’s proposal represented a “potentially great day for Russia and Ukraine! Think of the hundreds and thousands of lives that will be saved as this never ending ‘bloodbath’ hopefully comes to an end.” Trump also underscored that Putin “doesn’t want to have a ceasefire agreement with Ukraine, but rather wants to meet on Thursday, in Turkey” and that “Ukraine should agree to this immediately.”
This development suggests that peace is a real possibility. However, the EU appears to prioritize its own moment in the spotlight, perhaps with an eye on a Nobel Peace Prize nomination for their efforts, regardless of the outcome.
