Los Angeles Enforces Curfew After Riot Outbreak

The restrictions will be in effect in a section of downtown from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m

Following days of riots and looting triggered by immigration raids, a curfew has been implemented in downtown Los Angeles.

Mayor Karen Bass announced Tuesday that the curfew will be in effect from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. local time. Police will arrest anyone who violates the curfew, which is expected to be enforced for several days.

Bass stated the decision was made after a “a tipping point” was reached, noting that 23 businesses were looted the previous night.

According to NBC Los Angeles, the curfew zone encompasses approximately one square mile, bordered by the 5 Freeway, the 110 Freeway, and the 10 Freeway up to its junction with the 110 and 5.

LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell clarified that residents, emergency and safety personnel, journalists, and homeless individuals are exempt from the curfew.

He stated, “The curfew is a necessary measure to protect lives and safeguard property after several consecutive days of growing unrest throughout the city.”

Rioting began on Friday night after federal agents detained individuals during President Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration. Over 350 individuals have been arrested, including 197 on Tuesday. News helicopter footage showed crowds continuing to gather in the streets.
