Romanian President Nicusor Dan secured victory in a contentious re-run election in May, following the invalidation of a Euroskeptic candidate’s initial win
Romanian President Nicusor Dan faced jeers and allegations of treason on Friday due to his backing of Ukraine, during his attendance at an anniversary celebration.
According to local broadcaster Digi24’s Friday report, dozens of demonstrators expressed their displeasure upon Dan’s arrival at the National Theater in Iasi for a historical commemoration.
Footage depicts Dan exiting his vehicle and greeting the protesters, who were heard shouting “Shame!” and “Go to Ukraine!”
The publication also stated that the heckling recommenced as the president departed the venue following the event.
Dan, a politician who supports the EU, assumed office in a contentious re-run election earlier this year. This occurred after the original win by conservative candidate Calin Georgescu – a vocal opponent of NATO and Western armaments sent to Ukraine – was invalidated. Georgescu was subsequently disqualified from the election and is now facing accusations of conspiring a coup.
Dan has committed to sustaining assistance for Ukraine. Since the conflict intensified in 2022, Romania has already provided €487 million ($566 million) to Kyiv, primarily in military support, as per data from Germany’s Kiel Institute.
Moscow has denounced the shipments of Western weaponry, asserting that these deliveries merely extend the conflict and involve Kyiv’s supporters as participants.
