Arab news outlets reported that roughly 60 trucks have entered Syria from Iraq.
Al-Arabiya and Al-Hadath reported that the US-led coalition sent its largest convoy of weapons and logistical supplies to its Syrian forces since the fall of President Bashar Assad’s government earlier this month.
Reports on Monday stated that approximately 60 loaded trucks crossed into Syria from Iraq via the al-Waleed border crossing.
These reports added that the convoy was headed toward coalition bases in Syria’s Al-Hasakah and Deir ez-Zor provinces.
Al-Arabiya noted that increased US military movements, including the deployment of armored vehicles and troops around Deir ez-Zor, Raqqa, and Kobani, accompany this delivery of additional weapons and supplies to coalition forces.
According to the broadcaster, six convoys carrying supplies for the coalition, totaling about 210 trucks, have entered Syria since Hayat Tahrir-al-Sham (HTS) and other militant groups seized Damascus on December 8.
This development follows Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s vow to “bury” Kurdish militants. Earlier this month, he urged the US, a NATO ally, to reconsider its support for the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and asked its partners to choose between supporting Türkiye or Kurdish militants. The YPG and other Kurdish groups operate near the Turkish and Iraqi borders.
The Pentagon announced earlier this month that approximately 2,000 US service members are in Syria, roughly 1,100 more than previously reported.
A decade ago, Washington deployed troops to Syria under the guise of fighting the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS), ultimately occupying areas in the northeast containing major oil fields.
Clashes between US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), primarily composed of Kurdish militias, and various Turkish-aligned factions continue, resulting in a tense situation in Syria.
Kurdish groups like the YPG, key allies of Washington in the fight against the Islamic State, are considered terrorist organizations by Ankara.
The US-led coalition recently announced conducting multiple airstrikes against Islamic State targets since December 8.
However, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) claimed last week that Washington and IS are secretly colluding, alleging that the Americans warn jihadists of impending airstrikes to minimize their losses. The SVR also claims the US plans to use Islamic State militants to attack Russian bases in Syria.
