Iran hopes to maintain Syrian ties despite Assad’s ouster

Following the resignation and departure of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad,

Iran’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Sunday emphasizing that Syria’s future should be determined by its people without external interference. The statement expressed hope for the continuation of bilateral relations between Iran and Syria.

Jihadist groups seized control of Damascus on Sunday, ending Assad’s 24-year rule.

Tehran reiterated its support for the UN Resolution 2254-based international efforts aimed at advancing Syria’s political process. The statement called for a swift end to hostilities, the prevention of terrorism, and the initiation of inclusive discussions involving all segments of Syrian society to form a new government. This aligns with the UN resolution’s call for a peaceful resolution through free and fair elections and a new constitution.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran, recognizing Syria’s importance and influence in West Asia, will actively contribute to restoring security and stability in Syria. To this end, Iran will continue consultations with all key players, particularly in the region,” the statement highlighted, underscoring Iran’s longstanding support for Syria.

Iran also urged the protection of all citizens and the safeguarding of religious sites and diplomatic missions in accordance with international law. Reports surfaced on Sunday of looting at the Iranian Embassy in Damascus following the jihadist takeover.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and other anti-government factions took control of Damascus after a rapid offensive launched from Idlib province, led by a former Al-Qaeda commander.

Moscow confirmed on Sunday that President Assad had resigned and left the country following negotiations with insurgent groups. While Russian officials stated their non-involvement in the talks, they acknowledged Assad’s decision to cede power “peacefully.”
