Introducing DHS’s New Multimillionaire Chief Markwayne Mullin, Owner of an Oklahoma Cattle Ranch

Following months of internal conflict regarding the Department of Homeland Security’s management of ICE’s immigration enforcement, President Trump stated on Thursday that he will work alongside Republican Sen. Markwayne Mullin, a junior senator from Oklahoma.

“The president and I are good friends,” Mullin told reporters following the announcement. “We look forward to working more closely with the White House.”

“Obviously, I’m going to be over there much more frequently.”

The Senator, who served a decade in the House of Representatives prior to beginning his Senate term in 2023, is most notable for challenging Teamsters President Sean O’Brien to a physical altercation during a contentious 2023 hearing. Among their disputes, Mullin criticized O’Brien’s $200,000 yearly salary, contrasting it with his own congressional salary of $174,000.

Mullin faced criticism after asserting during that hearing that he earned only $50,000 annually when operating a plumbing business. However, his financial disclosure from 2012—the year he was first elected to Congress—painted a different picture: his self-reported income was $92,000, nearly twice the amount he claimed.

A more thorough examination of Mullin’s latest financial disclosure from 2024 shows the senator is a multimillionaire.

What are Mullin’s assets?

Members of Congress are not required to reveal the precise values of their assets and debts, but may instead provide a value range. They are also exempt from disclosing the value of their primary personal residence. Consequently, determining an exact net worth for representatives is quite challenging.

Mullin’s sole reported income is his congressional salary—despite owning multiple businesses, a home services company, and properties in Oklahoma and Washington, D.C.

He and his wife, Christie, have owned Mullin Plumbing in Broken Arrow, Okla., for 28 years; his Senate biography states it is the largest service company in the area. He is also a co-owner of Mullin Ranch LLC, a 1,600-acre cattle ranch and event venue in Oklahoma, estimated to be worth between $1 million and $5 million per the filing.

In 2024, his wife sold Rowan’s Restaurant, a steakhouse in Stilwell, Okla., for an amount between $1 million and $5 million, according to his disclosure. His biography indicates he and his wife founded the steakhouse. He is also a joint owner of Mullin Family Holdco LLC—with its value not reported—and COP Hometown Parent LLC, valued between $500,000 and $1 million, as per the disclosure. These assets are spread across himself, his spouse, and his children, with individual shares frequently valued between $500,001 and $1,000,000.

He also established Mullin Environmental, according to his website. The company obtained a COVID-era Paycheck Protection Program loan for $169,200, which was subsequently forgiven.

He holds full or partial ownership of at least 30 commercial, residential, and land investment properties, four of which are valued above $1 million, according to the 2024 financial disclosure. Most are in Oklahoma, but he also owns an investment property in Washington, D.C., and one in Englewood, Fla.

The 2024 disclosure also lists dozens of corporate securities and mutual fund holdings, with values ranging from under $1,001 to $1 million.

In 2024, Mullin also secured a line of credit valued between $5,000,001 and $25,000,000 from the global financial services firm BNY, the disclosure shows.

Building business at home

He was raised on his family’s ranch in Westville, Okla., where he still resides with his wife and their six children, per his Senate biography. He attended Missouri Valley College on a wrestling scholarship but left at age 20 to rescue the family business after his father fell ill, according to his website. He earned a degree in Applied Science in Construction Technology from Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology in 2010.

Mullin is among several multimillionaires in the Senate. West Virginia Sen. Jim Justice, who owns multiple coal and mining companies and a luxury resort, is valued at approximately , according to fintech firm . ( also estimated Mullin’s net worth could be as high as $65.9 million). Meanwhile, Sen. Mark Warner is the wealthiest Democratic senator, with an estimated net worth between $76 million and $303 million, largely derived from investment funds, reported.
