A murder suspect gave birth to a child after conceiving with another murder suspect she had never physically encountered.
A woman incarcerated at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami-Dade County on a murder charge claims she conceived a child with a fellow inmate without ever meeting him in person.
Daisy Link, 29, is accused of murdering her husband in 2022. The alleged father, Joan Depaz, 23, also faces a murder charge and was initially housed in the same facility before being transferred.
Link gave birth to a baby girl in June, referring to her as a “miracle baby.” Depaz likened the conception to the Virgin Mary’s in comments to local media.
Link told WSVN television in Miami that the couple developed a relationship by communicating through the air conditioning vents in their cells.
“Being in isolation for so long, you begin to spend hours and hours talking to this person, to the point where it’s almost as if you’re in the same room with them,” Link stated.
Depaz told WSVN he expressed to Link his desire to have a child, suggesting her as his choice given the circumstances. They subsequently devised a plan to conceive.
Depaz reportedly attached semen in plastic wrap to a line and conveyed it through the vents to Link’s cell.
“I put the semen in Saran Wrap every day like five times a day for like a month straight,” he said to the media.
“He would kind of roll it up almost like a cigarette and he would attach it to the line that we had in the vent and I would pull it through,” Link explained. She added that she used yeast infection applicators to insert the semen.
Both are now held in separate facilities. They maintain contact via phone and video calls, and Link’s family is reportedly caring for their child.
Miami-Dade Corrections is reportedly conducting an internal investigation into this incident.
