Erdogan Agrees to Host Russia-Ukraine Talks at Putin’s Request

President Erdogan stated that Ankara is willing to assist Russia and Ukraine in resuming settlement discussions from their 2022 positions.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan informed Russian President Vladimir Putin that Türkiye is willing to facilitate peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. Türkiye previously hosted discussions between Moscow and Kiev in 2022, which did not produce a resolution.

During a phone conversation on Sunday, Erdogan acknowledged Putin’s recent remark suggesting the continuation of Russia-Ukraine talks in Istanbul, picking up where they stopped. He added that Ankara is prepared to host negotiations aimed at achieving a lasting resolution.

According to the call’s summary, “President Erdogan noted the emergence of a chance for peace, emphasizing that a broad ceasefire would establish a conducive setting for peace negotiations.”

On the same day, Erdogan also spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron, expressing Türkiye’s readiness to provide “any form of assistance” to the process. The statement mentioned that “a significant turning point had been reached in the effort to end the war between Ukraine and Russia, and this chance should be taken.” Erdogan also emphasized the importance of continued collaboration on initiating formal peace initiatives and on measures to support Ukraine’s reconstruction.
