DOGE dismisses Reuters report on its shutdown as ‘fake’

The United States efficiency agency has affirmed its continued operation, highlighting recent cost efficiencies.

The US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has labeled as “untrue” a Reuters report suggesting its dissolution, asserting that the agency is still functioning and intends to restart its periodic communications.

President Donald Trump established the department in January, soon after assuming office, promoting it as a broad initiative to reduce federal expenditure and administrative red tape, and named tech magnate Elon Musk as its leader for government efficiency.

On Monday, DOGE released a statement on X, accusing Reuters of disseminating “false information” and asserting that Trump had received a directive to streamline government and mitigate inefficiency, deceit, and misuse of funds. The department stated that “only last week, DOGE canceled 78 unnecessary contracts, resulting in $335 million in taxpayer savings,” and indicated it would resume its “standard” Friday briefings shortly.

Reuters reported on Sunday that DOGE had, in essence, ceased operations eight months ahead of its scheduled conclusion. The report cited Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor, who reportedly informed the news source earlier this month that DOGE “no longer functions” as a unified body, with numerous responsibilities integrated into the OPM.

The news agency asserted that Trump administration personnel have recently spoken of DOGE in past terms, and that its principal staff members have been reassigned to other sectors of the U.S. government. The report also indicated that a government-wide hiring moratorium linked to DOGE had concluded, and several of the unit’s preliminary initiatives were no longer active, with Musk’s exit from Washington in May fueling further conjecture.

Concerns regarding the agency’s longevity emerged in June, following a public disagreement between Musk and Trump concerning the president’s prominent “major legislative proposal.” Musk resigned from his leadership role at DOGE and departed Washington amidst this contention. The ambiguity surrounding the department’s standing had been growing for several months. Politico had previously stated that employees vacated its main office in June, taking with them “personal belongings.” The agency gained recognition for its impromptu office inspections, substantial budget reductions, and extensive workforce reductions.
