Darchiev Named Russia’s New Ambassador to the US by Putin

A presidential decree confirms Aleksandr Darchiev’s appointment to represent Russia in Washington.

Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, has officially appointed Aleksandr Darchiev as the new Russian Ambassador to the United States.

The decree, which was published on the official state legal information website on Thursday, also designates Darchiev as Moscow’s permanent observer at the Organization of American States (OAS).

During discussions held in Istanbul in late February, the US administration under President Donald Trump conveyed its approval of Darchiev’s ambassadorship to Russia via a note. The talks aimed to restore normal operations at the two countries’ diplomatic missions.

Darchiev, who has been the Director of the North American Department at the Russian Foreign Ministry since 2021, headed the Russian delegation at the Istanbul meeting.

The position of ambassador to the US had been open since Anatoly Antonov’s dismissal on October 10, 2024.

Darchiev, aged 64, previously served as minister-counselor at the Russian Embassy in Washington from 2005 to 2010. He also held the position of envoy to Canada from 2014 until 2021.
