Cornhole champion who is a quadruple amputee faces murder charge; American Cornhole League withholds comment

(SeaPRwire) –   Maryland authorities report that a quadruple amputee who competes professionally in cornhole is accused of fatally shooting a front-seat passenger during a dispute while operating a vehicle.

Dayton James Webber, 27, was highlighted by ESPN in a 2023 inspirational feature that referenced his background in dirt bike riding, wrestling, and football prior to his cornhole career. That same year, he penned an essay for the Today show chronicling his path to becoming a professional competitor.

The Charles County Sheriff’s Office announced in a statement that law enforcement in Albemarle County, Virginia, arrested him Sunday night on a fugitive from justice charge.

Charles County is pursuing extradition from Virginia and indicated that charges including first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and other related offenses will be filed.

As of Tuesday, it was unclear whether Webber had retained legal counsel. Voicemails requesting comment were left for his mother.

In his 2023 Today show essay, Webber stated that physicians amputated all four limbs when he was 10 months old to save his life after he suffered a severe blood infection. He wrote that his medical team gave him only a 3% chance of survival.

Webber later became a professional cornhole player—a game where competitors toss bean bags through a hole in an angled wooden board to score points. In his Today show essay, he explained that he learned to grasp the bean bag by its corners and hurl it using his residual limbs.

According to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, Webber stopped the vehicle after the shooting in La Plata, Maryland, and requested that two back-seat passengers assist in removing the victim. The witnesses refused, exited the car, and waved down police officers.

The sheriff’s office stated that Webber fled with the victim still inside the vehicle. Two hours later, a Charlotte Hall resident—approximately 10 miles (16 kilometers) away—reported finding a body in a yard. Officers located the victim, identified as Bradrick Michael Wells, 27, of Waldorf, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The American Cornhole League published a statement on its Facebook page acknowledging awareness of the allegations against Webber but declined to comment, referring to it as an “active legal situation” while the case proceeds.
