Miguel Uribe Wounded in Suspected Assassination Attempt During Bogotá Campaign Event

Colombian Senator and presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe Turbay sustained critical injuries in an attack during a campaign rally in Bogotá on Saturday.

The 39-year-old senator from the right-wing Democratic Center party was meeting with supporters when he was shot in the head around 5 p.m. local time, according to a statement from his party. He was rushed to a hospital in critical condition. Authorities apprehended one suspect at the scene.

“We condemn the serious attack against Senator and presidential pre-candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay,” the Democratic Center stated on X, characterizing the event as politically motivated.

President Gustavo Petro denounced the shooting and mandated a thorough investigation to bring the “scum of humanity” responsible to justice. “My sympathy to the Uribe family and the Turbay family. I do not know how to mitigate their pain,” he expressed on X.

Foreign Minister Laura Sarabia also responded: “Violence can never be the way… I sincerely hope that (Uribe) is well and out of danger.”

Uribe, a prominent critic of the current administration, declared his candidacy for the 2026 presidential election earlier this year. This incident is among the most severe attacks on a national political figure in Colombia in recent decades. There has not been a comparable assassination attempt since the early 1990s, during the time of drug lord Pablo Escobar.
