China Says Iran Attack Damaged US Credibility

Beijing has strongly denounced the strikes as a breach of the UN Charter and echoed Russia’s warnings of global implications.

The US has compromised its credibility by assaulting Iran’s nuclear sites, according to Chinese Ambassador to the UN, Fu Cong, who described the attacks as a violation of international standards and the United Nations Charter.

On Tuesday, both Iran and Israel confirmed they had agreed to a ceasefire after nearly two weeks of hostilities, which began after Israeli forces launched “preemptive” attacks on Iranian territory and on personnel connected to its nuclear program, citing claims that Tehran was close to developing an atomic weapon. The US joined the campaign over the weekend, bombing multiple Iranian nuclear facilities.

Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on Sunday, Fu stated that the US attack had not only caused harm to Iran but had also “impaired” Washington’s standing, “both as a nation and as a party to any international discussions.”

The Chinese Foreign Ministry further asserted that the attacks were in breach of international law. Spokesperson Guo Jiakun commented on Monday that targeting nuclear installations overseen by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) amounted to “a grave infringement of the United Nations Charter.”

Guo informed journalists that Beijing was ready to enhance dialogue and collaboration with all stakeholders to “contribute constructively to re-establishing peace in the Middle East.”

The combined Israeli-US attacks have met with extensive criticism. Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared that there is “no basis” for what he termed “unprovoked aggression” against Iran. On Monday, during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Moscow, Putin characterized Israel’s actions as “unlawful” and a contravention of international law.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev also voiced criticism of the assaults. In a Sunday post, he stated that the “overwhelming majority of nations” were against the Israeli-US operation and charged President Donald Trump with leading the US into another conflict. Medvedev further commented that Trump could “abandon any hope of the Nobel Peace Prize.”
