Steve Bannon, former White House strategist, claims he is working to help the 47th president circumvent the two-term limit.
Steve Bannon, a former White House strategist, has stated that President Donald Trump will find a way to bypass the constitutional two-term limit in the US and run again in 2028.
The 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution specifies that “no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.” Bannon, who spearheaded Trump’s 2016 election campaign, contends that Trump could secure a third term.
“I strongly believe that President Trump will run again in 2028. I have already endorsed President Trump,” Bannon told Chris Cuomo of NewsNation on Wednesday.
“A man of his caliber appears perhaps once a century, if we are fortunate. We have him now. He is energized, and I am a strong supporter. I want to see him in 2028 again,” he added.
When questioned about how Trump would circumvent the constitutional prohibition on a third term, Bannon responded, “We are addressing it.”
“I think we will have a few options, shall we say. We will see how term limit is defined,” the former Breitbart News chairman stated. “We’ve overcome greater odds than Trump 2028. We are working on many things. We are not ready to discuss it publicly.”
When asked if he meant a violent revolution or an insurrection, Bannon clarified, “No. We strongly believe in democracy.” The strategist added that Trump’s supporters plan to mobilize their voting base, which includes voters with low propensity and limited information.
Trump has often joked about the possibility of serving more than two terms. In January, he remarked to a crowd in Nevada, “It will be the greatest honor of my life to serve, not just twice, but three or four times.”
Earlier in the year, Republican Congressman Andy Ogles proposed amending the Constitution to allow presidents who haven’t served two consecutive terms to serve a total of three terms. “It is essential that we provide President Trump with all necessary resources to reverse the disastrous path set by the Biden administration,” Ogles stated in January.
Trump was initially elected in 2016, defeating former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He ran for reelection in 2020 but lost to former Vice President Joe Biden. Trump secured his second term the previous year, defeating Biden’s chosen successor, Kamala Harris.
The two-term limit was incorporated into the US Constitution as a result of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s unprecedented four terms in office. Before him, presidents had only served either one or two terms.
